Salty's Diner, Sullied By Delivereasy
Rating: 3/10 Complaints - Misleading, Lack of Info, No Chips, Expensive, Arm and Leg, Had to Remortgage House, Diner Food, Stodge
Hungover and entertaining family but too lazy fatigued to cook anything, we made the dubious decision to order 3 burgers from Salty's Diner via the even more dubious Delivereasy service. My beef (ha) with Delivereasy is that they jack up the prices at least 25% above dine-in rates and then chuck on a delivery fee, so you often end up receiving cold, travel-sick, severely overpriced food that leaves you wondering why on earth you didn't just heat up some spaghetti and dino nuggets and call it a night. I realise there is always a tax for convenience but the recent experience with Salty's was enough to have me repenting of my slothful ways and begging for the forgiveness of my bank account.
I personally am not a huge fan of Salty's as there are simply too many carbs on the menu. While it's true that you can order some very good cocktails with brunch if you decide to go down and dine in, the menu is very much "American diner, but make it just burgers" so there is a profound lack of selection for those who occasionally decide to go with the healthy option to stave off scurvy for another few weeks. There is, to be fair, very little wrong with the food so long as you know what to expect and are in the mood for stodge 'n chips.
We ordered a couple of beef burgers and a fish burger, after trying for about half an hour to figure out if any of the burgers came with chips, or if these needed to be ordered separately. I should have known that in this day and age of minimum reward for maximum profit, the chips would have needed to be ordered separately. I even attempted to verify this via phone call, but the number supplied on the diner's website does not work and did not even go to voicemail. Upon seeing the order total of close to $100 for the three burgers, we sort of presumed that for that princely sum, chips would surely be supplied with the burgers?
Wrong, it was just the burgers. To be fair, the burgers were pretty good considering they'd been sitting in a paper bag in the back of the car of some poor harassed delivery driver, the bun was less soggy than it could have been and you could tell that the food would have been really nice eaten fresh on site, but the lack of any chips for $100 left a taste in my mouth more sour than the pickles.
The fish in my burger was truly excellent and definitely the highlight of the meal, despite the surfeit of tartare sauce, omission of paper towels and the weird, orangish cheese on the beef burgers. The burgers were substantial and we didn't need the chips after all, but I would rather go all the way to Salty's to dine in of an evening and at least get a cocktail as well, than pay that much for 3 slightly damp and clammy burgers again.
I'd love to say that we learned a lesson from this experience and that I'll be more careful of the finances in future, but we all know this will happen again with similar results and I'll probably whinge about it then too. It definitely inspires me to cook at home more, as I find Delivereasy pricing an absolute insult for what you receive and a fine example of daylight robbery. Will see if I can recreate a classic American burger at home before thinking about ordering delivery again.
