Joe and Joy

Joe and Joy is one of those cute little pastel themed cafes tucked safely away from the main drag, and located very conveniently next door to a supermarket, kids playground and a library. I get such old school and comfortable vibes from this place, the food is truly excellent and it's the kind of place you can just turn up in your jeans for a Sunday brunch and have a nice breakfast outside in the sun, I find a lot of places now are on the pretentious or overly upmarket side but this place just seems to be about good food and friendly service. I'm not going to say the service here is overly quick as they are often very busy, but all the times I've visited, the staff have been so nice that the wait doesn't become bothersome in the slightest.
This is definitely the place to go, I guess, for a cup of joe and a helping of joy in the form of either a healthy or greasy, hangover-worthy option from either the cabinet or the menu. Both the cabinet and menu food are varied and strike a good balance between being classics and having an interesting twist. You will find everything from the standard steak and cheese pies and bacon quiches, to roast vegetable wraps, salads and keto/gluten free options, meaning that you can come here with your mate of a delicate constitution and they will still be able to find something good to eat, rather than miserably nibbling at soggy lettuce leaves or missing out entirely. I've complained multiple times about places (Salty's and Pizza Hut I'm looking daggers at you) that just offer a surfeit of carbs and nothing for those who are trying to keep their health meter up, and it's refreshing to see a cafe that offers a proper choice.
You can sit either inside or outside at Joe and Joy, we prefer to sit outside as the sun is nice and it can get a bit noisy inside with the coffee machine going, like I mentioned they are often busy and they cater to kids with these very cute colouring pages featuring things like unicorn cats, so the trip hazards indoors become a bit much for clumsy people with short attention spans such as myself.
The range of menu food spans the classics from burgers to eggs benedict of a few shades, bagels, waffles and a few other things. The chicken and beef burgers here are both equally nice and a good size, I usually get the smoked salmon bagel which comes with no shortage of glorious smoked fish and beautiful salty capers. The waffles come in a black forest version which is my recommendation if you've had a big night out and just want dessert for breakfast, this is full of chocolate and berry treats and comes with edible flowers. I must have been a cow in a previous life as well as this one because munching on flowers makes me super happy, I think you sometimes get violets and violas. The benedict is similarly excellent and they do not skimp on the smoked salmon, you can also get an avocado bagel that comes with toasted almonds and pistachios scattered artistically. So overall a good choice for your beauty snacks with all those nutrients and good fats.
The cabinet also contains a multitude of filled donuts which I understand are made by the cafe, unique to the cafe and change on perhaps a weekly basis, as well as a large selection of cakes and cookies which are all interesting and aesthetically pleasing. I'm usually too full for donuts after smashing my smoked salmon so haven't tried one, but have heard the legends about these and really like the look of their hundreds and thousands cakelets. They also seem to do birthday cakes of a full size and you can also get family sized pies for about $20, which is a very good deal as these would easily feed 4 and they are delicious, well made and full of meat and not just gravy. You can also get bags of their cookies and shortbreads for home, these are very good and we find the prices very reasonable. One of the days I was walking past Joe and Joy and hadn't thought about what to do for dinner, so picked up a family pie and that solved the whole issue so I was able to do creative stuff instead of messing about cooking.
The coffee here is good too. Be aware that if you order a large, you will get a 90s style bowl, so the medium is usually sufficient. They also give you a choice with their iced coffees, of having the coffee over ice or blended with ice and cream, so you can pick and choose which is more your style. Much better than the cafe directly across the square from Joe and Joy, which has mediocre coffee, meh food from the 80s and weird service where you can turn up at the counter which doubles as a newsagent and tacky gift shop, and be told to wait in the mile long line while they do who knows what.
Highly recommend Joe and Joy, I'm sure we will be sampling all their offerings in due course as we can't stop going back.
